With the holidays here and eating heavier meals, I love taking advantage of the energy I get from eating heavier meals (had a great dinner at my work Christmas party last night) to power through my workouts first thing in the morning and complete it with a replenishing high protein smoothie.
Today’s post workout smoothie (or this could be have as a breakfast or snack option ideally) is one of my go to smoothies. Here are the ingredients and the benefits of each:
From left to right:
1-2 tsp Pure Matcha green tea powder
1/2 frozen blueberries
1 cup dark leafy greens (baby kale)
1 tsp spirulina powder
1/2 frozen pomegranate arils
1 tsp chocolate flavoured liquid chlorophyll (I know sounds kinda gross right? trust me, it’s not when in a smoothie!)
1/2 frozen dark cherries
2 scoops Avena Original’s super berry protein powder (you could use whatever protein powder you prefer and use 1 scoop of that, as long as you’re getting between 18-25 g of protein – 3 scoops of Avena Original’s is 1 serving).
Matcha Green Tea Powder: full of antioxidants; promotes calm, concentration and clarity of mind; boosts energy, metabolism & burns fat; and detoxifies. Check out this link for more info.
Dark Leafy Greens: high in fiber; full of vitamins, minerals, and disease-fighting phytochemicals.
Liquid Chlorophyll: helps to rebuild and replenish our red blood cells, boosting our energy and increasing our wellbeing almost instantly; has the power to regenerate our bodies at the molecular and cellular level; high levels of Vitamin A, C and E; has ability to bind to and remove toxic heavy metals; Contains vitamin K, C, folic acid, iron, calcium, protein; rich in magnesium (therefore alkalizes the body) and ability to aid our body’s tissue in destroying germs. Pomegranate: High in antioxidants; vitamin C, K; manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron, and fiber.
Cherries: combats post workout soreness because it significantly reduces muscle inflammation and soreness; reduces risk of gout; supports healthy sleep (melatonin), reduces belly fat
Blueberries: holds the highest antioxidant of any fresh fruit, neutralizes free radicals (which can affect disease and aging in the body); promotes urinary tract health; preserves vision to name a few.
Protein Powder: manufactures hormones, enzymes, cellular messengers, nucleic acids, and immune-system components; generates the biochemical substances needed for cardiovascular function, muscle contraction, growth, and healing. helps repair tissue and promotes muscle building.
The specific kind of protein powders I used are from Avena Original’s. You can read about them in the links I’ve provided above. I love it because of the thicker consistency that vegan protein powders provide, and I do like the earthy, raw taste. This specific high quality protein powder delivers many health benefits that many other market protein powders do not (you do pay for what you get!)
If you prefer runnier consistency and less earthy taste, then whey protein is probably a better choice.
